Artist Spotlight | Jay E (Screenworks)

Jay E (Screenwerks)

Probably best know as the producer behind Nelly’s 8 times platinum Hip-Hop classic “Country Grammar”, Jay E is also a DJ and a Video-DJ to boot. He first caught our attention, when we checked out his amazing mixes on vimeo. Recently, along with the rest of his Screenwerks crew, he took part in WMC’s VJ-Challenge and finished a solid third.

DVJ Vision: You are an accomplished producer as well as DJ. Which came first for you?
JAY E: DJ came first, then producer…and now VJ.

DVJ Vision: And when did you start adding video to the mix?

JAY E: Probably about 2 years ago when Serato introduced video. I’m a vinyl guy and I love video, so when this happened I was on it from the start.

DVJ Vision: Are all of your DJ gigs AV now, or do you still do audio-only gigs?

JAY E: I’m only video, I won’t do audio gigs, too much hard werk.

DVJ Vision: How would you describe your style?

JAY E: Video or audio?

DVJ Vision: both

JAY E: Audio – I like to play a lot of genres, I grew up with a producer mind, accepting all styles of music, and I’m a fan of all music…so I like to present that when I play.
Video – I like to hit the audience with movies, TV shows, commercials, ambient, effects etc., but do it all rhythmically. I like a lot of effects on my videos, something that makes it unique.

DVJ Vision: Where do you get your visual content for your live sets?

JAY E: Secret…haha, I get a lot of content from friends and homies that make stuff. I have a few DVDs from DVJ Vision. I edit a lot of my own stuff as well.

DVJ Vision: Do you ever play a straight up music video, or do you edit and add effects to most of it?
JAY E: Here’s the process: First I grab the audio in 320kb or better, then find a high quality video that goes with it… then I put them together, so now I have high quality audio and video, but before I render out, I like to take a step back and think what movie/TV show etc. would go good with this. So I find that missing link and add it… then I add effects and then I render out and add it to my shows.

DVJ Vision: You mentioned Serato. What does the rest of your DJ-set-up look like?
JAY E: I use Serato, Mix Emergency all on one laptop, on the other laptop I use a program called Avenue for logos, visuals effects etc., then I blend the two laptops with an Edirol V8 video mixer.

Artist Spotlight | Jay E (Screenworks)

DVJ Vision: And what kind of audio mixer?
JAY E: I use a DJM-800, and I use a midi cable to connect to mix emergency on my laptop.

DVJ Vision: What kind of software and hardware do you use to prepare your video content?
JAY E: I have done all my edits on a Macbook Pro with Final Cut Pro bundle, Motion, Live Type etc.. I travel a lot so I use a laptop.

DVJ Vision: Is that how you created Poisoned Candy, your amazing Halloween mash-up?
JAY E: Yes, and thank you…. I did the audio first in Ableton, just to build a blueprint, then I started working in Pro Tools to make re-drums or remixes or whatever – it sounds better in Pro Tools for me, I have a lot of plug-ins and nick nack’s in that program – then, once all that is done, I start putting the video together.

DVJ Vision: How many hours did that take? Or should I say weeks?
JAY E: Took about a month. I had to get all the movies – I’m a DVD junkie – then figure out what goes where. I wanted to have tons of horror films in this but have it all make sense.

DVJ Vision: How do you think the rising popularity of AV-performers will affect technology? What kind of gear do you see yourselves using in 5 years time?
JAY E: I think it will help out in tons of ways, to the record labels to big companies etc. I feel like in 5 years we will be doing 3D video mixes. As far as gear, I will always be on some turntables.

DVJ Vision: Word is the Technics are being discontinued…
JAY E: That’s why I have 5 pair and still buying ‘em up.

DVJ Vision: Haha. So, tell me about Screenwerks…
JAY E: 5 guys: 4 VJ’s (2nd Nature, Jordan Laws, Steve1der and myself) with the mastermind of Shecky Green. A video crew that loves the art and helping it take it to the next level.

DVJ Vision: Is this more about producing content and sharing it or about performing live together?
JAY E: Its all that. Producing audio, like if I have an idea for a remix I will lay down some tracks and once I get it to a good point I will send the tracks to one of the Screenwerks guys to put their 2 cents in it. Editing video is the same way, I always like a second opinion and I do the same for them…its team werk! We do perform together, at certain venues. We try to do as much as we can when we can.

DVJ Vision: 8 turntables?
JAY E: We haven’t done an 8 table set but I’m sure it will happen. Usually we do 4 tables and we all switch off.

DVJ Vision: What do you consider the highlight of your career?
JAY E: As a producer when I produced country grammar it sold 10 million. I produced a lot on Nelly’s second record and that sold 10 million. As a VJ/DJ, when I started going worldwide to perform.

DVJ Vision: Do you have any advice for the up-and coming AV-performer?
JAY E: If you are trying to come up in the AV world and you are trying to perform for an audience and you want them to dance, make sure audio comes first. Then with the video make it unique and fresh…do some effects or add movies or TV shows or something that will make your video interesting.

DVJ Vision: What’s next for you?
JAY E: Going to werk on a DVD with Screenwerks, all 4 VJ’s on 1 DVD.

DVJ Vision: What’s the concept or are you keeping it hush?
JAY E: No concept as of now, just 4 VJ’s getting down. It’s mostly to show everyone all our skills.

DVJ Vision: Excellent. Can’t wait to see it.

7.29.14 | Summertime

A new Pixel Girls clip and this one embodies it’s title; a rambling on the theme of Summertime and starring a beauty that seems to be made of summertime itself. Ligia comes from the beach of Cartagena, and spends her life in a near constant summertime. The video was shot in various locations around Chicago, featuring the train tracks going over Ashland Ave. Film glitches, old movie film reels and footage of sand and waves add texture, and b-roll of train tracks is layered with the performance footage. Directed by Christopher Andrew Shot...

03.11.14 | WMC VJ Challenge

For it’s sixth year, Winter Music Conference is putting on a VJ Challenge and for it’s sixth consecutive year DVJ Vision is proud to sponsor the competition. The event started out right around the time DJing with video was becoming popular. The very first event had more VJ’s (video-only) than AV-performers, but that momentum shifted to where last year it was all Video-DJ’s. We look forward to seeing an impressive field of performers! 3/26 2pm, Miami Beach Convention Center Judges: VJ Psyberpixie, Psybervision Scotty B,...

Today marks the day we can finally order those new Mac Pro’s and find out exactly what the updates to FCP are. First off, this is not the major update that some had hoped for (this is version 10.1 not version 11, which also means it is free). It lists 35 new features (see below for a complete list), chief among them the ability to take advantage of the Mac Pro’s dual Graphics Processing Units (GPU’s). Transitions,...

07.05.13 | Night Garden

We are very pleased to present to you our newest download clip NIGHT GARDEN. We first came across pieces of this clip a few years ago, when Christopher Andrew was VJing the main stage at Ultra Music Fest Miami. Watching the tunnel of moths on those massive screens was mesmerizing and hypnotic and it was this clip that prompted us to hire Chris right away to create content for DVJ Vision. Chris describes Night Garden as one of the most involved graphics pieces his team has ever created: “We found a still photograph of a beautiful moth,...

Combining the underwater footage with Alessia in a field of lightbulbs and then a number of scenes from an abandoned mental asylum in upstate New York, this clip truly is saturated with incredible locations.
